The format for group classes entails the following. Any number of
students may attend with attendance typically ranging anywhere from
12 to 30 students. Classes begin with basic step exercises for all Levels and shines
for Level II and Level III classes. Students space out behind the
instructor in front of the wall of mirrors and practice their basics
without a partner. This exercise reinforces the basics, gives everyone
a chance to warm-up and prepares the students for the dance move that will
be taught that day.
A dance move will be introduced, demonstrated, then broken down into
parts. Students then partner up and go through the motions of the
dance move slowly and without music with the instructor. Students
change partners every time the dance move is practiced. Finally, the
dance move is performed by the students with music. Again, every time
the move is practiced, students change partners.
Group classes provide the opportunity for students to dance with a
number of different partners. In this way, they can experience a
variety of styles and approaches. This is especially helpful for men
because it gives the man a feel for how different females dance. Getting
a different experience with each partner helps train the man in
becoming a better leader.
