Alex also offers private group classes for small groups of people such
as wedding parties, corporate events or just a group of buddies. In
these classes a small group of people can get instruction in areas of
special importance to them.
There are certain advantages that private group classes provide. First,
a group of friends can share the cost of a private lesson making it
cheaper for everyone. Second, because you're going with a group of peers,
it can make the individuals more comfortable at the start. Finally,
because your peers are also learning to dance, you can get together and
practice, go out dancing and generally enjoy being dance enthusiasts
together.
Just like anything in life, however, you have to take the good with the
bad. The disadvantage to taking any group classes is that the instructor's
attention is divided among the various individuals and/or couples in the
group. Eventually, this will cause everyone in the group to take a bit
longer to learn the dance moves. Of course, if it's a group of two
couples, it's not that bad. But obviously, the bigger the group, the
more difficult things become.
There is no definite rule of thumb to deciding whether or not to take
private group lessons with a group of friends. It depends on many factors
such as your learning curve, financial constraints, comfort, so on and
so forth. For the individual or couple, private lessons are the most
focused and intense. Regular group classes are the least focused and
the least in intensity. Private group classes fall somewhere in the middle.
The great thing about all of this is that you have options. Some students are very much
content taking regular group classes and attend on a regular basis
climbing the skill-level ladder. Others will settle for no less than
undivided attention from the instructor. Then there are those who find
a balance in between. Whatever you feel is best for you just go for it.
In the end of the day, the result is the same - you'll have fun feeling
the excitement of dancing salsa!
